Meet the Dachshund breed

Dachshunds are amazing little creatures. They’re intelligent, clever, curious, friendly, fun, cute, brave, loyal and sometimes stubborn little dogs. Dachshunds can be trained and can become wonderful companions. This is the breed known as the “Wiener Dog” because of their long bodies. Dachshunds are little in size with short legs and an average weight range of about 10 to 30 pounds.

Dachshunds are active dogs full of energy and enjoy playing, jumping, fetching and much more. This high energy and small sizes combinations make this dog perfect for hunting because they are able to hunt in small areas that may be difficult for others to reach. Their long snout and keen sense of smell support their hunting ability. They have a natural instinct to hunt and dig. This benefit is the reason why we have different sizes and types.

The weird hair dachshunds are the entertaining dogs. They enjoy playing, having fun and clowning around. They bring great joy to their master and friends. The long hair dachshunds are glamorous, proud and mellow. They have a confident stands to themselves. Their curiosity encourages their bravery characteristic to shine. The smooth hair dachshunds are serious keen dogs. They’re very focus and protective of their territory and master. They’re very alert and aware of their surroundings. Quite often they will use their strong barks to be an alarm when they feel their space is being invaded. This breed is perfect for hunting because their keen smell and short distance to the ground lead time to their target and once focused on that target their ability to dig and retrieving gives them the necessary edge to claim their victims.

Health wise, back injuries are common with this breed due to their long spines. Dachshunds can be large eaters but picky eaters, therefore, health issues can get very serious. It’s important to keep their weight proportionate to their size. Many dachshunds enjoy running jumping. It's a must to be caution of their activities, they can jump on and off furniture or large items and can seriously cause injure to their spine resulting to major pain in the area.

We own three miniature smooth hair dachshund dogs. Their all females and bring us great joy. Each one of them has their own characteristic and we love them very much. They are wonderful pets and we spoil them rotten. This is our favorite breed!
